fuck yr frumpies
March 1st, 2010
I have a zillion Frumpies songs in my head right now, thanks to all the old mixtapes I listened to while cleaning the apartment this afternoon. For the uninitiated, The Frumpies were Tobi, Kathi, and Billy from Bikini Kill + Molly from Bratmobile + (briefly) Michelle Mae from the Makeup. They released a slew of 7″s in the 90’s and a CD comp of all their singles called Frumpie One-Piece. (It has a panda on the cover and makes a totally awesome patch.)
Frumpies forever!

Clipd Beaks’ awesomely creepy vid for the track “Blood.” Yet another reason I don’t hang out in nature alone.

Did you ever see that movie Bandwagon which came out in the mid-90s? I still remember how excited I was when I watched it years ago- a movie about a band! A band with regular people! I can do that! Seeing it again tonight, I can’t say it elicited the same youthful hope and optimism, but it was mildly entertaining nonetheless. And it’s still one of the more realistic “music movies” out there, albeit firmly rooted in the 90s.
But the 90’s weren’t so bad, right? God, I’m getting old!
it’s been a bloody stupid day

I find weird things on the internet when I can’t sleep. Like this short film directed by Kevin Drew (of Broken Social Scene) starring FEIST AND CILLIAN MURPHY.
I know I didn’t go to art school or anything, but the whole mummy in the frozen Canadian tundra bit really perplexes me.

Like everyone else in the world, I’m totally obsessing over Best Coast right now. Bethany’s voice gives me shivers.
They’ve been playing around LA fairly often, but I have yet to get my butt to a show. We should all get on that before they start headlining at the Henry Fonda!
Split 7″ with Jeans Wilder out January 18 on Atelier Ciseaux.

Primal Scream is one of those bands that people always talk about. I like “Velocity Girl” well enough but never took an active interest in any other material (perhaps because of their later affiliations with acid house and copious amounts of ecstasy- in other words, my idea of hell). On a whim, though, I recently purchased Evil Heat at Amoeba. Besides being put off by the frequent use of “cocaine” as a lyric, I was shocked to discover that the woman singing on “Some Velvet Morning” is none other than Kate Moss. (Apparently everyone knew this but me. WTF?!) For whatever reason, I am oddly intrigued by her involvement in a NANCY SINATRA COVER DONE BY PRIMAL SCREAM, and can’t stop watching this video.
Although, it kind of makes me want to start chucking weighty 19th century novels at them.

In lieu of running errands, I sat glued to the couch listening to Part Time Punks radio on KXLU. (The fact that I could have also listened in the car, is only now occurring to me.) Over the course of the show I feverishly assembled a list of bands I want to check out, at the top of which is Dum Dum Girls.
A quick google revealed they’ve already gotten their Pitchfork mention, played CMJ, and were snatched up by Sub Pop. But just cuz I’m late to the party, doesn’t mean I can’t have any fun!
LA peeps, they (or possibly she- there are conflicting stories as to just who is in the band) are playing @ Spaceland on Nov. 28.
Shabouy!

Trying to watch Joy Division videos on YouTube is extremely frustrating, as 99% are fanboy homages full of stock photos, feeble attempts at avant garde filmmaking, or in one instance, footage of a girl brushing her teeth. Good thing I found this.
Say what you will about Xiu Xiu, but any band that can pull this off (in the freezing cold no less) has my backing. And on a side note, who puts on outdoor shows in the winter?!

Getting my records back after many months has been like inheriting a whole new treasure trove of music to poke around in. As of late I’ve re-discovered Erase Errata’s “Nightlife” album, and cannot stop listening. When it first came out I thought it was good, but now I just want to yell MASTERPIECE.
And how can you deny a good whistle breakdown?

The only thing that could possibly make this more epic would be a cameo by Lou’s cats. This is my 19 year old self’s dream come true.

My daily motivational theme song as I apartment hunt from 2000 miles away. I’ve decided that when I finally do make it to the City of Angels, I’m gonna roll in on an inflatable desert/watercraft a la Mr. Black.

I’ve been down in the dumps lately, so today I bought myself some jazz shoes. Strange yes, but I’ve been wanting some forever and H&M had ‘em for $17.
I also finally heard this:
Sigh.
