Last night some ladyfriends and I hit up the Outfest screening of Le Tigre: On Tour at the Ford Amphitheatre. It was amazing! Watching JD, Johanna, and Kathleen navigate gender politics, Hatebreed, and inane interviewers with wit and pizazz was nothing short of inspirational. And of course the live footage, complete with costumes and choreography, was super fun, as Le Tigre shows always were.

Tomorrow would have been Ian Curtis’ 54th birthday, and to honor the occasion, this week’s Part Time Punks radio show will be a tribute to Joy Division. As an extra special bonus, the entire Joy Division performance from their December 18, 1979 gig at Les Bains Douches in Paris will be broadcast in its entirely (for the first time EVER!!!). Tune in to KXLU tomorrow from 3-6 PST (88.9 FM Los Angeles and/or kxlu.com).

AND THEN, this Sunday at Part Time Punks the club, it’s Factory Records Nite.

hospital records

After spending the last two days visiting my sister in the hospital, it was a total solace to come home and find a package of records waiting for me outside the door (the fruition of an “I’m buying myself a birthday present” whim). The lovely little gems I just received from Caputured Tracks (one of the best young labels out there!) include the Aias 7″, Grass Widow s/t 12″, and Brilliant Colors s/t 12″. Yessss!!! So if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go drink a big-ass glass of wine and listen to some records. Goodnight. (Please enjoy some Aias though. They will make you smile.)

So just recently (yesterday) I discovered the Daytrotter site. (How the hell did I not know about this treasure trove of awesomeness?!) Basically here’s what it is: touring bands stop by the Daytrotter studio in Rock Island, Illinois and record sessions, which are then posted on the site along with a really cool illustration. Each day it’s a new band. Sounds pretty good so far, right? Well check out the list of bands. Everyone and their mother! Dino Jr. to Asobi Seksu to Little Wings to frigg’n Wire! (And just the other day my favorite little shoegazers Weekend.) E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E! But wait, it gets even better. The entire archive of sessions (dating back to 2006) is downloadable. FOR FREE! (There’s even an iPhone app for all you people with fancy phones.) Seriously, this has made my day/week/month. I might even go so far as to say year. (Yeah, it’s been a pretty crap year.) So dig in my friends.

(Yep, this is exactly how excited I am!)

As you’ve probably heard by now, Portland’s Explode Into Colors have called it quits. A major bummer, especially if you’re like me and never got a chance to see ‘em play. BUT, their final record is now available for pre-order via the super cool M’Lady’s Records. The Quilts 12″ EP compiles all three of their hard to find singles, and the first 500 copies come with a special bonus 7″. (Also check out the Explode Into Colors blog-o for the Paper 7″ and a pretty sweet t-shirt sale.)
