Riot grrrl legacy project is looking for video submissions!

Did Riot Grrrl (or any variety of DIY/punk feminism) change your life?

Whatever gender you are, whether you’re in your 40s or in your teens, whatever punk rock feminism means to you—we want to hear from you.

We (Cat Tyc and Sara Marcus) are making an interactive video installation at girlstothefront.com, in conjunction with Sara Marcus’s book about Riot Grrrl, Girls to the Front, that’s coming out this fall. The point isn’t to wax nostalgic—or, at least, not to dwell in nostalgia; it’s to acknowledge and celebrate the countless ways that the legacy of Riot Grrrl is still very much alive in all of our lives. And we need your contribution to make this happen.

Last night some ladyfriends and I hit up the Outfest screening of Le Tigre: On Tour at the Ford Amphitheatre. It was amazing! Watching JD, Johanna, and Kathleen navigate gender politics, Hatebreed, and inane interviewers with wit and pizazz was nothing short of inspirational. And of course the live footage, complete with costumes and choreography, was super fun, as Le Tigre shows always were.

Northwest peeps: a string of shows featuring The Need (reunited!), Bangs (reunited!), C Average, and Thrones will be happening July 21st-23rd to benefit Team Natalie. Check out all the deets here. Natalie Cox has long been a fixture of the Northwest punk scene- playing in bands, working at Kill Rock Stars, booking shows, etc. She has a rare form of cancer and all proceeds from the shows will go towards her treatment. You can also donate via her blog. Spread the word!

If you haven’t already noticed, I am totally psyched on girls rock camps. Empowerment! Instruments! Seeing girls rocking out on stage is the equivalent of Cute Overload for me. Which is why I am so excited about the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp Live Blog. Staff and campers will be posting pics and videos all summer long, so you can catch an insider look at the awesomeness.

I’ve been babbling about this all week, but haven’t mentioned it here…JONATHAN RICHMAN is playing at The Smell! TONIGHT! He’s one of the few people who can make Massachusetts sound kinda cool, which believe you me is no easy feat. Growing up in that land of Stop & Shops, “Roadrunner” was my anthem (although as a disaffected teen I of course preferred the much inferior Sex Pistols version).

And did I mention Jonathan Richman can dance like nobody’s business?!

The show starts at 9pm and there’s no opening band, so get there on time. $15/all ages.

Have you checked out Jenny Woolworth’s Women in Punk Blog lately? If not, you totally should. And if you have no idea what I’m talking about, let me ’splain. Jenny Woolworth’s Women in Punk Blog is run by an awesome lady/long time music fan named Nicole Emmenegger (Jenny Woolworth is her “geeked-out alter ego”). Her well written and informative (although sadly not always updated) blog gives props to new and old bands alike, and features interviews (Sara Jaffe!), historical/biographical info, and best of all (drum roll, please) there are downloads galore!

Also while your at it, be sure to check out the Jenny Woolworth Women in Punk Archive, a kickass database featuring women musicians active in the 1970s and 1980s.

If you are even a casual reader of this here bloggy blog, you should know that Kleenex/LiLiPUT are one of my all time favorite bands. Due to popular demand, and because they totally rule, Kill Rock Stars are trying to release a 4-LP box set of the band’s entire catalog (complete with fancy box packaging and a full color booklet of photos, flyers, etc). However, they need help raising the funds to make it happen.

And that’s where we come in, because we are awesome people. (Of course there are also special incentives, ranging from an mp3 of your choice from the box set for a $1 pledge, all the way to a $1,500 or more pledge which receives the 4lp box set, test presses of the box set, mp3s, “Live Recordings, TV-Clips, & Roadmovie” cd/dvd, t-shirt, folded poster, thank you note from members of Kleenex/LiLiPUT and a copy of every album released on Kill Rock Stars in 2010 shipped anywhere in the world. Damn!) All the deets and an informative video (btw I used to have that same troll doll) can be found on Kickstarter.

Oh, and there are only 16 more days to make this happen. So let’s do this.
