Last night some ladyfriends and I hit up the Outfest screening of Le Tigre: On Tour at the Ford Amphitheatre. It was amazing! Watching JD, Johanna, and Kathleen navigate gender politics, Hatebreed, and inane interviewers with wit and pizazz was nothing short of inspirational. And of course the live footage, complete with costumes and choreography, was super fun, as Le Tigre shows always were.
I watched Shotgun Stories the other day, and now all I want to do is listen to old Bruce Springsteen records. And move to a small town. Okay probably not, but living in a place where people are not constantly talking about being discovered and/or what celebs they kinda sorta know sounds really damn appealing to me about now. Even if there are weird Shakespearean feuds going on.
Fun fact: the film was directed by Jeff Nichols, brother of Ben Nichols from Lucero who did the soundtrack. (And in my mind Lucero = baby Springsteen. Hence my non stop Nebraska listening sesh.)
NYC’ers, listen up! A work-in-progress version of Le Tigre: On Tour will be screened next week at NewFest. (Wednesday, June 9 at 10PM and Sunday, June 13 at 2PM to be exact.)
The documentary follows “underground electro-feminist performance artists” Le Tigre’s last world tour in 2005, and is directed by Kerthy Fix, who along with Gail O’Hara directed the beloved Magnetic Fields doc Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields. Johanna, Kathleen, and Fix will be answering questions afterward.
I never tire of watching music documentaries. This one’s called I Need That Record! and chronicles the demise of indie record stores across America. It’s kind of a bummer, but really informative and in a way sort of inspiring, people taking the risk to do what they love (my favorite trope btw). Aside from talking to current and former record store owners, filmmaker Brendan Toller interviews Ian Mackaye, Thruston Moore, Mike Watt, Glenn Branca, Legs McNeil, Noam Chomsky(!), etc. etc. (but, um, where the ladies at???) regarding their take on the homogenization/commercialization/conglomeration of the music biz.
For one week only, Pitchfork.tv is showing I Need That Record! in its entirety (which I’ve embedded here). Check out the film’s website for purchasing info and other news/tidbits. And long live record stores!
