Did you ever see that movie Bandwagon which came out in the mid-90s? I still remember how excited I was when I watched it years ago- a movie about a band! A band with regular people! I can do that! Seeing it again tonight, I can’t say it elicited the same youthful hope and optimism, but it was mildly entertaining nonetheless. And it’s still one of the more realistic “music movies” out there, albeit firmly rooted in the 90s.
But the 90’s weren’t so bad, right? God, I’m getting old!

So my new(est) favorite band is Weekend, mostly because they sound like a really obscure and awesome old British band (which is what I thought they were until I found out they’re in fact youngins from SF). Also, “Youth Haunts” is probably one of the best songs I have heard in forever. Seriously.
Here’s some live footage from a show at Adobe Books (and on a side note, bookstore shows RULE!):
They just released their debut 10″ on Mexican Summer and are gonna be playing at My Bloody Valentine Nite @ Part Time Punks this Sunday. Yessssss!!!

This flyer was made by an 8 yr. old named Nico, who is also DJing the show on Saturday. How cool is that?!

I wonder if she would be in a band with me.

I totally think I would get a better night’s sleep if my head could rest on these amazing Miranda July pillowcases.

Found these in my photo library. Thorns of Life playing a house show in Oakland, January 2009. (If this totally passed you by, Thorns of Life were a very short lived band featuring Blake Schwarzenbach and Aaron Cometbus; i.e. the 90s punk rock dude dream team.)

I miss this.

I’ve wanted to see Mike Mills’ documentary Does Your Soul Have a Cold? ever since I first read about it circa 2007. Unfortunately, it was never properly released. Imagine my surprise then, to find a stack of copies at Family. (I was told Mills “bootlegged” them himself and brought them in. Rad!) Of course I had to buy one.
Does Your Soul Have a Cold? chronicles five people taking antidepressants in Tokyo shortly after the influx of American pharmaceutical companies’ aggressive ad campaigns, and the subsequent cultural shift in the way depression was talked about and treated in Japan. Mike Mills talks about his work in an interview at SXSW:
On a similar note, the recent New York Times article “The Americanization of Mental Illness” is FASCINATING.

Somebody purchase these for me, and I promise that I won’t wipe my sandy beach bum on them come summer, but instead will hang them up in my room and stare at them all year round, and they’ll never have to absorb a goddamn thing but my ever loving reverence.

let’s dance to joy division
January 29th, 2010
I am completely horrified to admit this, but I actually don’t mind this song. It coincides well with my intricate escapist fantasy of moving to a blustery and remote English town, whereupon my entering the local watering hole I encounter a pack of parka clad kids dancing House of Pain style to the entire Joy Division catalog. Immediately things get all “Gabba gabba we accept you, we accept you, one of us,” and we are disgruntled Joy Division superfan friends for life. Although, upon further consideration, Joy Division’s musical output does not lend itself to the type of jubilant and frantic bouncing I’m envisioning for the dance floor. Okay, I’ll work on that part of the scenario…

Clipd Beaks’ new album To Realize officially dropped today on Lovepump United. I’ve been rocking my digital copy for some months now, and it is UH-MAY-ZING. Download the track “Home” from Stereogum to get a taste.

Record release show this Friday 29th at the Hemlock in SF. And *possibly* they’ll be down in LA around the end of March. Do not sleep on this people!

let’s all be special art rebels together
January 25th, 2010
I’m the first to admit that the art world confounds and intimidates me. Nonetheless, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, being held this Thursday 28th – Sunday 31st at Pacific Design Center in WeHo, looks pretty friggin’ awesome. Namely…
- Playing Fair: Women in the Contemporary Art Market. Moderated by Kimberly Light, Owner, Kim Light/LightBox, Los Angeles. 3pm, Friday.
- The Los Angeles Premiere of “The Posters Came From the Walls” (Depeche Mode fans from around the world) by Jeremy Deller & Nick Abrahams. 7:30pm and 10pm, Friday. AND Q&A with directors by Michael Stock (Part Time Punks): 9PM.
- A presentation by artists Ari Marcopoulos and Dave Muller. 1pm, Saturday. (Ari Marcopoulos is one of my favorite contemporary photographers, and not just because he’s shot Alan Vega. Although that totally helps!)

Ticket info, visitor info, and full schedule can be found here.
